Len, Cariou is an extremely accomplished actor with a deep resume, but because of his age and his need to walk with a cane (when the Blue Bloods cameras are off) he is NOT in demand. Cariou will remain the Reagan Family patriarch until the last show is filmed before the series is canceled UNLESS he dies in real life requiring the Blue Bloods writers to come up with a scenario explaining why he’s no longer on the show.

His current role is extremely limited at this point, mostly relegated to the Sunday dinner scene and sometimes a post-dinner advice chat with one of the other family members. So it’s not like he’s got a giant role that could be explained away. That being said Cariou’s real-life death would have to be addressed soon then later if it happened. The writers can’t hide him (at school) as they did with “Jack Reagan” or take a job in California like Sami Gale.

  1. I imagine that showing he has prostate cancer in the last episode they will expand on that in future series until they write him off as the cause of his death. If he has to leave I would like to see him go out saving people in a store robbery. Just my opinion.

  2. My family and I love Blue Bloods. Holesome entertainment you dont see much anymore. All the cast are incredible. Love the dinner scenes. Now I hate to see him leave. He will surely be missed. But on the flip side im glad to have met him through the show for so long. Wishing him the very best. God bless him in every step he takes and in every decision he makes.

      • Maybe he could get hit by a car crossing the street or he could have covid n die from it. Maybe hit by a stray bullet meant for a criminal, but yes we will all miss him. Won’t feel the same

    • Blue Bloods is one of the only shows where good family values are shown. If Len does leave the show, I’ll understand since we are about the same age. I’ve watched him in several different movies over the years and I must admit I’ve had a big crush on him for a long time. So whatever he decides to do, I’m wishing him only the best and I pray 🙏 God will watch over him and bless him with good health. I will definitely miss him if he leaves the show. I love all the characters in the show and I hope Blue Bloods will be on for many more years.

  3. He is great but he has been in every show. He deserves a rest.
Let him be in 2 of 5. He is the backbone of the family.

  4. Mr. Cariou is a talented Actor who has been creating a clear sense of reality in the “skin” of his characters for many years. That devotion to his Art is no small endeavor and leaves many a younger Artist exhausted. Surely he DOES feel like our family, but whether he needs to retire from Blue Bloods, or “take a trip” within the storyline—he deserves time to rest on his Laurels with our
    admiration and support.
Oorah to you, Lan & God Bless

Mr. Cariou is a very talented actor. If he does leave Blue Bloods, whether temporary or retirement, Mr. Cariou will certainly be missed missed!! My most favorite scene he did was with Will Estes. The two of them discussing his friend’s death and that it just wasn’t his time to go. I know he pulled so many emotions from the tv audience in that episode. I’m sure from the crew & cast the day that was done too. He is so wonderful and amazing.

Hope not. Pops is the glue to this family.

    • He has provided some great advice to many of the other characters in the show based on his years of experience. However I feel his past sometimes isn’t as relevant today.

  7. LEN Cariou deserves to retire some time. He was on “Nash Bridges” for many years Also. The idea of traveling with a friend sounds good. We don’t want you to kill the character off. (NOTE: WHY DID YOU MISSPELL HIS FIRST NAME IN MORE THAN HALF THIS ARTICLE?)

  8. Perhaps that is why the script writers came up with his ‘colon cancer’ diagnosis in a recent episode.

[That being said, those writers really need to get a little medical knowledge. Colon cancer is commonly treated with a ‘Colon Resection’, and hardly ever recurs. My own Grandmother had the procedure twice in 30 year period – it never came back after that and she lived to 103]

    • She was more fortunate than many who would have lo bed to live to that ripe old age!
No, please don’t write him off instantly Lu. A trip that is probably on his bucket list, with occasional zoom interactions would be nice! My very favorite show! Bring it in!!

    • I believe it was prostrate cancer, not colon cancer. Caught early, prostate cancer will still allow you 5-7 years of life. Radiation is a treatment as is hormone treatment that have great success rate and require no surgery. Surgery is contraindicated in some with cardiac disease, patients requiring blood thinners, and some other cases. A heart attack after surgery cannot be treated or the patient will bled to death. Heart patients need blood thinners. Prostate surgery needs coagulants because of all the bleeding.

  16. I like Geisers response as to the future story line except keep Jamie and Eddie together. Eddie quits (temporarily) because she get pregnant with twins or triplets. Then if and when Bluebloods ever has a final season there could be a spin-off with the continued life of Jamie and Eddie and family.

I was kind of feeling icky reading this article as the Author spoke of scenarios…ifs like Lan dying in real life. Just saying!!
As a huge, huge, big fan of the Blue Bloods series, I wish it would last forever. Of course that isn’t reality. Congratulations to the unbeatable cast and crew, the writers.
